Would you like to get your students engaged in the classroom and build their literacy skills in fun, creative ways? Are you looking for innovative ways to engage students and help them learn academic vocabulary? Do you often wonder how you can get your kids talking more in depth about specific and relevant subjects instead of the chaos that sometimes ensues when we suggest to our students, talk to your neighbor.” Would you like to hear your students respond, “I feel elated” instead of, “I’m tired”. In order to get students using academic vocabulary, we need to get them speaking and participating first. In this hands-on and interactive 3-day (18 hours) workshop, participants will learn proven student engagement strategies followed by methods for increasing academic vocabulary. In this workshop, we will explore the research that supports student engagement and direct vocabulary instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to experience each strategy and plan lessons to bring back to the classroom. Before long, your students will be letting you know that they are feeling “famished” prior to lunch, and “enthralled” about coming back from recess to learn even more!

And, it is our responsibility as educators and researchers to examine, enhance, and validate our Montessori pedagogy and practice for the 21st century, just as Maria Montessori and Nancy McCormick Rambusch challenged existing educational methods and philosophies and introduced new ideas and models. In her book Learning How to Learn (1962), Dr. Rambusch challenged us to consider this question: “In an effort to find more effective solutions to learning at all levels, can Americans do less than look at Montessori again?”

The MWV Children's Museum is hosting it's 2nd Annual Come Play With Me Conference on September 25, 2010 at Kennett High School! This year's keynote, Genuine Happiness, delivered by Scott Noyes of Empowering Programs, will be thought provoking and impact directly your influence on children! Here is a brief glimpse into the discussion: "Research is showing what qualities do and don't have an effect on our genuine happiness. Does ma...king more money, staying healthy, getting as much education as possible or living in a sunnier climate actually make us happier? Advancing to the higher range of your sustainable happiness can be achieved by feelings you conscientiously choose to associate with the past, present and future. Realizing that we are capable of changing our emotional satisfaction with life puts us in control of making choices that will alter the way we look at being human. How could these psychological behaviors influence raising children? What can we do to help develop authentically happy children? Pleasures and gratifications are distinctly different behaviors. Where in the daily care of children can we increase gratification while stopping the emphasis society puts on pleasures?"
