ONLINE RESOURCES ON NUTRITION AND READING

Exchange writer Kirsten Haugen from Eugene, Oregon, offers suggestions on two online resources:

Waste-Free Lunches (http://www.wastefreelunches.org) has tips for parents and schools to reduce packaging and food waste.  They offer a comparison of costs and waste associated with disposable packaging vs. reuseable packaging, and also ideas for making more interesting lunches that might actually get eaten.  They also include resources for those who want to encourage a waste-free lunch program at their school.

Starfall (http://www.starfall.com) offers a great, free early reading program.  This online resource offers several simple but engaging stories that introduce specific sounds, with a simple, clickable interface: to hear a word sounded out, click on it, and it models the decoding process by highlighting each letter as it sounds out the word, then saying the whole word aloud.  A few clickable items in the pictures make it fun, but not a total distraction from the text itself.  Parents and teachers can link to background information on the program, and families can download printable activities, while teachers can e-mail requests for free classroom sets of printed materials.  These stories make a great introduction to reading for younger kids, a fun addition to summer reading, and a great support for struggling readers in first or second grade.  Starfall.com was created as a free public service for teachers and families by the Bluemountain online greeting card people, one of whom grew up with a reading disability and did not read until middle school.
