Observing and Celebrating Children's Thinking
November 18, 2022
I like to think of ideas as potential energy. They're really wonderful, but nothing will happen until we risk putting them into action.
-Mae Jemison, First African American Woman in Space

On a recent walk, I came across this delightfully ambitious hopscotch drawn in front of a parked car on a quiet street. I was reminded of educator Ron Grady's words, "Artifacts are a child’s participation in the cultural heritage of humanity, and evidence that children have stories to tell."

What story do you see in the chalky artifact of this child's play? Share your observations and reflections in the comments!

Thank you, Lisa! Holding a positive image of each child is such a valuable orientation for anyone who spends their days with young children (or with anyone!) Children seen with your eye are fortunate indeed.

I love looking at the artifacts left behind by children and imagining the creativity and intelligence it represents.

In this photo, I certainly see a child who knows most numbers and numerals to 20, at least. And a child who can create shapes and understands a hopscotch space. But I also see a child who may have wanted to jump more. And didn't let the obstacle of the car in her path stop her. Persistence and creativity in thinking.
