Stories of Resistance Now in Stock
March 13, 2023
"The way other people see me doesn't make me or break me. I will continue to be who I am and what I am."
-Joyce Jackson, in Stories of Resistance

As we celebrate Women's History Month, Exchange Press is honored to announce Stories of Resistance: Learning from Black Women in Early Care and Education is now in stock! In this new book edited by Alissa Mwenelupembe, twelve women tell their stories, each choosing a definitive word for her essay, revealing the breadth of their experiences and perspectives: rooted, authentic, determined, limitless, reassurance, passion, rebirth, intersectionality, resolute, planted, resilience.

In Mwenelupembe’s own words, "While all of the stories are very different, common threads run through each of them. These threads create a tapestry that reflects the experiences of Black women in America."

She concludes the book with an invitation to keep sharing stories:

This was a book that I wanted to read when I was a little girl with brown skin, surrounded by a sea of white faces, wondering where I fit. I wanted to read this book when I went to college and spent four years at a university, but was only taught by one Black professor. I wanted to read this book when I brought another little brown girl into this world and held my breath as she navigated the world, looking for faces that resembled hers. And today, I still want to read this book, because Black voices are being silenced through senseless acts of violence and racism and I know that the only way we can move forward is to keep sharing stories just like these.
