Child Care Action Campaign to Close

CHILD CARE ACTION CAMPAIGN TO CLOSE

The Child Care Action Campaign (CCAC), for twenty years an active advocacy voice for children and  families in the United States, will cease operations at the end of this month.  In 1983, New York City activist Elinor Guggenheimer declared, "There's a crisis in child care in America.  We've got to get the word out!"  With this inspiration, CCAC was created to bring to the attention of the American public the fact that there was a serious shortage of child care, that much of what existed was not of good quality, and that its cost was beyond the reach of the typical working family.

CCAC President Faith Wohl observed, "Today, we take deep satisfaction in the fact that the issue of child care has been taken up by many others, including business groups, government agencies, and a mulititude of other non-profit organizations..."  She cites competition among these groups for a shrinking base of public and private funding as a key factor in the decision to close.  Another is the devolution of child care from a national to a state and local issue.  

"CCAC's Board of Directors is gratified that the original objective of the Campaign, to raise awareness of the child care crisis, has been achieved.  The issue is definitely on the map," says Judith Kaufman Fullmer, Co-Chair of CCAC.  "We've seen a tremendous growth in public awareness, with most opinion polls reporting strong support for public funding of a better system of care.  We hope that others will continue the work that CCAC started."
