Cultivating Human Potential

In his new book, Doing the Right Thing for Children:  Eight Qualities of Leadership, Maurice Sykes recommends asking the following questions to improve the process of recognizing and drawing out the human potential of others:

  1. When in your professional or personal life has someone seen your potential?  How did that feel?  What was the result?
  2. How do you create opportunities for children and adults to learn and grow?
  3. When have you overlooked someone's potential because he or she was different from you?  What happened?
  4. Next time you are frustrated with someone you supervise or a child you teach, stop and ask yourself, "What is this person's potential?  What can I do to ensure that this person's potential is realized?"
