For example, when focusing on fish or things that fly, our children have created very large mobiles that take up half the room above our heads. The children create these creatures or fliers out of things we've collected: boxes, wrapping paper, etc. They have distinguishing features and can sometimes, but only sometimes, be recognized.

A favorite of mine to do with toddlers is a sticky collage. Use clear contact paper taped to a table with the sticky side up. Children may choose from an assortment of items to place on the surface. When they are finished, you can place a sheet of construction paper on top and tape off the edges to make a lovely picture to display. Children practice fine motor skills, learn what will stick to the surface and what won't, move items around as they choose, and do not have to attempt to control a glue bottle.
