- Situation -Ever since I've gone back to work, I feel just awful about leaving my son at child care. I keep hearing people say that it is wrong for mothers to be away from their children and I feel terribly guilty. At the present time, it is impossible for me to quit my job. I want to do what is best for my son, but feel totally confused by all the negative things people say about child care. Am I a bad mom? Do you have any advice or suggestions?

Bringing your son to child care does not make you a bad mom. Mothers feel guilty leaving young children in child care; women and men judge one another's choices; parents worry about doing what is in their children's best interests. I believe that the issue is not from whom or where a child receives care but the quality of the care itself that supports children's development. Yet most of us hold pretty strong opinions about who should care for young children.
