I was most struck by Carolyn’s stillness and concentration as she listened to teachers reflect. It was obvious that all of her attention was focused on the conversation, with utmost respect for the teachers’ ideas. As a relatively new early childhood director decades ago, I was so fortunate to have Carolyn Edwards as one of my mentors on my leadership journey. She worked with our staff over the course of one year, helping us learn to be better thinkers, not settling for the surface level answer, but always pushing ourselves to go a little deeper. I’ve asked two colleagues, also people whose leadership journeys I very much admire, to take over the rest of this column as we honor the life of a true way-shower in our field.
