Formed by myself and another teacher, Learning Time Preschool, Inc. opened in September 1973. Our goal was to provide a high quality, part time, preschool program. Since it was to be only a "part time" program, we really didn't consider ourselves to be "starting a business." Little attention was given to financial planning or marketing surveys and neither salaries nor profits were an immediate concern. We did, however, contact an attorney to help form our corporate structure. To house our school, we were able to find a nearby church which was willing to provide us the use of their rooms rent free for one year.We began our program in the fall of 1974 with a three day per week part time program for three and four year old children. We opened with an enrollment of 45 children and a staff of four. Our program continued to grow and soon we were also offering two year old and pre-kindergarten classes. In addition, we started "Mommy Time," which allowed for optional extended day sessions. I continued to teach, while directing a staff of 11 teachers, as our enrollment climbed to 175 children. ...
