This issue's cover directors manage one of the newest facilities of one of the oldest and largest children's organizations in the world. Barnardos, founded over a century ago, currently provides a wide range of services, from child care and residential care to adoption services and AIDS education, for over 22,000 British children and families a year. Tricia Green serves as the project leader and Vivien Thomas as the assistant project leader for Barnardos child care center in Deptford, a southern suburb of London.The Akwaaba Centre was designed to provide full day "nursery" services for 28 children from two to four and a half years old and morning "creche" services for up to 14 children from 18 months to four and a half years. The local authority pays for 60% of the fee for nursery children, and Barnardos covers the balance. Barnardos receives no public subsidy for its creche services, although parents do contribute a small fee.
