Early learning programs have struggled our way through an incredible set of additional challenges over the last year and a half, and here we are at the traditional month for launching a new school year. We need to catch our breath and consider: how have we been changed and how do we move forward?
Luz Casio, center director, adjunct faculty, and co-author of the 3rd edition of “The Visionary Director,” is well-known for the phrase “El momento es ahora.” She was saying “The time is now!” long before a pandemic disrupted our lives. Luz has always sensed the urgency of not wasting a minute while children’s brains are rapidly developing. But in saying this, she means something other than the post-pandemic cry of “we have to hurry and make up for a year of lost academic learning.” Instead, Luz thinks carefully about the research on how children learn best; she also thinks critically about cultural democracy. Whether in the context of complex bureaucratic demands that come with her program’s multiple funding streams, or in the disruption of a global pandemic, Luz insists on holding herself accountable to her program values and to her community.
