Exchange surveyed members of the Panel of 300, our advisory board of center directors, to find out what questions they would like to address to manufacturers and bus companies for early childhood programs. We then posed these questions to the companies and have presented a representative sampling of their responses below:What steps are being taken to improve the safety of buses?
Jacob Elzinga, Midwest Transit Equipment: Having been involved with the bus industry for about 20 years now, I’m convinced the current bus manufacturers remaining, along with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), have taken safety to an all time level of excellence without sacrificing that fine balance of cost and return. The most significant announcement by NHSTA occurred July 2003, when NHSTA actually gave the name of “Multifunction School Activity Bus” (MFSAB) to white buses that meet all the safety standards of school buses with the exception of the flashing lights, stop arm, and color. Manufacturers are always looking at ways to continue to build the units to meet all the standards and yet keep costs down if possible.
