Who's the Target Audience?
The target audience for this kit is beginning and intermediate teachers working with young children from birth to age 8. Teachers will learn the difference between positive guidance and punishment as well as expected outcomes for children of using positive guidance techniques in the classroom. In addition, they will learn specific positive guidance skills to add to their teaching repertoires.

Kit Timeline:
Preparation time for this kit ranges from 1-3 hours. Implementation time is 1.5 hours.

Training Outcomes:

  1. Teachers will differentiate between discipline and punishment.
  2. Teachers will define children's misbehavior as opportunities to teach.
  3. Teachers will explore the differences between time out and time in.
  4. Teachers will review the school's written material about discipline to assess if it accurately represents the school's philosophy of discipline.
  5. Teachers will select a name that the school's approach to discipline will be called.

These training outcomes address the following:

  • A-6a; A-6b of the Accreditation Criteria and Procedures of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC, 1998)
  • 1 and 4b of NAEYC Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation, Initial Licensure Level (NAEYC, 2001).
