A Lifetime of Joy
October 28, 2003

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply.  Willing is not enough; we must do." - Johann von Goethe

A LIFETIME OF JOY

Work & Family Life newsletter has recommended The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness by Edward Hallowell (New York: Ballentine Books, 2002).   In reviewing this book the newsletter observed:

"Based on current research as well as his own personal experience as a parent, teacher and child psychiatrist, Dr. Edward M. Hallowell ushers the readers into 'the often-thought-about but rarely mapped world of 'happiness-in-the-making.'  The qualities we want to instill in children are of paramount importance, says Dr. Hallowell.  They include optimism, playfulness, a can-do attitude, and 'connectedness,' the feeling of being a part of something larger than yourself.  The five-step plan Dr. Hallowell suggests is based on connection, play, practice, mastery, and recognition.  These concepts, he says, hold the key to raising children with healthy self-esteem, moral awareness and spiritual values."
