The want ad reads very simply: "Wanted: a person who likes children to teach preschool three days a week. Some experience helpful, but not necessary."The phone interview begins routinely. They ask about background, experience, education, and training-and that's fine, but somehow you get the feeling there is more to this than just "liking children." With a bachelor's degree from Michigan State and an almost completed master's in child care administration, it appears I pass the beginning test.
"Well," says the person on the other end, "we are a church school, so we will need proof that you are a Christian . . . as well as character references. Also, our class cooks once a week; are you comfortable baking lamb stew in a paper bag?
"And, by the way, our school is in charge of the training for the state conference. Would you have any objection to doing a small (two day) workshop on 'the use of PCs for CAI to assist in the teaching of timoral, sequencing, and spatial tasks'?"
A quick check with other family members helps me understand that a PC is a personal computer, CAI means computer aided instruction, and a trip back ...
